Taking Time to Think About Friends in an AI Age

Living Forward in an AI-Accelerated Era

Do you know I actually have to make time to think about my friends?

That sentence surprised me as I wrote it. Friendship, to me, is not a task. It isn’t something you optimise or schedule between meetings. And yet, in a life filled with screens, travel logistics, and the constant hum of the digital world, I’ve noticed something quietly true: if I don’t make space, the day fills itself, efficiently, politely, and completely.

Efficiency is relentless like that.

This past year, many friends have died. I think about them, of course. But I also find myself thinking about the spouses and families who are still here; still making tea, still folding laundry, still waking up into their loved ones absence.

There is something sacred about that. And also strangely surreal. As though life has quietly changed its angle and I am now seeing the long arc more clearly.

Beginnings. Middles. Endings.

And the way love does not stop just because a body does.

Maybe it’s age. Maybe it’s simply that we’ve lived long enough to understand that time is not abstract. We are embodied. We breathe. We leave.

So then comes the choice: do I live in the past, polishing memories until they gleam… or do I look forward into what’s unfolding?

I am a forward-looking woman.

The future is arriving with hyper-scaling, robotics, AI, space travel, and materials science that would have sounded like pure science fiction when I was a child. Sometimes I feel as though I have wandered into the bonus level of history.

It’s thrilling. And slightly unbelievable.

But here is what strikes me: in a world where machines are learning to simulate relationship, we humans may need to become more deliberate about living it.

Our friends are scattered around the world. All entrepreneurs. Builders. Thinkers. Alison and I make the effort to see them as part of our life plan. Sometimes just for a hug, an overnight stay, breakfast, and then we’re off again.

The fact that we can board a plane or bus or boat and sit across from someone we love, still feels miraculous. A practical miracle - with passports and snacks.

And when we do sit across from one another, sharing the same air, the same laughter, the same pauses, something happens that no screen quite replicates.

It is nourishment in a different category.

Digital connection is extraordinary. We are grateful for it. But embodied presence changes the nervous system. It recalibrates us. It reminds us that we are not avatars. We are human.

So today, I am making time to think about friends.

The living.

The gone.

The ones I will see soon.

The ones I think of quietly.

If this resonates, consider this your gentle nudge: send the message. Make the plan. Schedule the hug.

Life is strange and sacred. Reach out to someone who matters this week — and follow through.

And if we are fortunate enough to be living in this improbable chapter of history, we might as well love boldly in real time. If you are building a life and business rooted in relational wealth, explore our Xponential Targeting Matrix.
